Tanned legs without sun exposure: how to tan your legs evenly

Legs are one of the hardest areas to tan evenly, and there is a biological reason for that. The skin around your knees, ankles and shins is often drier and thicker than elsewhere on the body, which means self-tanner can develop too dark in those areas. Our complete self-tanning guide covers the general basics; here, you will learn how to get smooth, evenly tanned legs with the right preparation and technique. Without streaks, patches or orange spots.

How do you get evenly tanned legs without sun exposure?

You can get evenly tanned legs by exfoliating beforehand, lightly moisturising dry areas around the knees and ankles, and applying a self-tanning mousse or spray with a Tanning Glove in circular motions.

The right order makes all the difference. Smooth, well-prepared skin absorbs the colour evenly, while dry patches can soak up the colour and turn darker. Work on one leg at a time, moving from bottom to top, and apply only a thin layer around the knees and ankles, as these areas tend to hold the most colour.

Why is it harder to apply self-tanner evenly on your legs?

The skin on your legs, especially around the shins, knees and ankles, is drier and thicker than in other areas and has fewer sebaceous glands. The stratum corneum, the upper layer of the skin, is firmer there. Dry skin cells absorb the active ingredient DHA faster and more intensely, which can quickly lead to darker patches around the joints.

In addition, the surface area of your legs is large, so if a product dries too quickly or you press too hard while applying it, friction streaks can easily appear around transition areas. This is not necessarily caused by a bad self-tanner, but by the nature of the skin in those specific areas. That is exactly why preparation and even application with the Tanning Glove make all the difference.

Why don’t my legs tan in the sun?

Legs naturally tan more slowly in the sun than the rest of your body, because the skin is thicker, produces pigment more slowly, and often receives less sun exposure due to clothing and friction. Self-tanner, however, can give your legs an even, natural-looking colour.

Many people notice that their legs stay pale while their arms and face already have a tan. With self-tanner, you are not dependent on slow pigment production: you can build the colour in a controlled and even way, exactly as deep as you want, and without UV damage.

What is the best self-tanner for your legs?

For legs, a self-tanning mousse or spray works best, applied with a Tanning Glove. A mousse gives you the most control on larger areas of the body and provides a long-lasting result for up to 9 days.

The Natural Tanning Mousse glides smoothly over the skin, dries quickly and develops evenly, making it ideal for the large surface area of your legs. Always apply the mousse with the Tanning Glove for a streak-free finish. If you prefer a spray, you can apply it with the same glove for an equally even result.

Step-by-step guide for evenly tanned legs

For legs, the general self-tanning routine applies, with extra attention to dry areas. Exfoliate 24 hours beforehand with the Black Exfoliator, shave during the same preparation phase (read why in our guide on shaving before or after self-tanner) lightly moisturise your knees, ankles and heels just before tanning, and then apply the mousse with the Tanning Glove. You can find the full basic routine in our guide on how to apply self-tanner without streaks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Good to know.

Legs tan more slowly in the sun because the skin is thicker and produces pigment less quickly. With self-tanner, you can still give your legs an even, sun-kissed colour, without depending on the sun.

Lightly moisturise these areas just before applying self-tanner and use a thinner layer. Otherwise, the dry skin around your knees and ankles can absorb too much colour.

A self-tanning mousse or spray applied with a Tanning Glove. A mousse, such as the MARC INBANE Natural Tanning Mousse, gives you the most control on larger areas like the legs and provides a result that lasts up to 9 days.

Self-tanner is the fastest and safest way to get tanned legs quickly. The colour becomes visible within 2 to 3 hours and is fully developed after 6 to 8 hours, without having to wait for the sun.
